It is with deep regret that we have learned of the unexpected death of Pat Davy, former Deputy General Secretary of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors.
Pat, a native of Thurles, Co. Tipperary, had served in Garda Headquarters where he was a sergeant based in the Criminal Records Office; he was also a former honorary secretary of the Garda Headquarters Branch of AGSI.

He earlier served in Sundrive Road and Crumlin and was one of the young gardaí who attended the mass meeting of gardaí in the Macushla Ballroom in 1961, 50 years ago. A former member of the AGSI national executive, he became Deputy General Secretary of AGSI in 1986 and served until 1994 when he retired from An Garda Síochána. He worked with the Halligan Insurance company for several years after his retirement and in that capacity was a familiar sight at every AGSI Annual Delegate Conference. Pat will be remembered as an outgoing person with a wonderful, warm and social personality combined with a bright intelligence. He was dedicated and passionate about the interests of the membership and he is the founder and the architect of the current AGSI Legal Aid Scheme. He enjoyed music, was a member of the Bureaucats musical group during his period in the Technical Bureau, and could be relied on to create joy and fun wherever he went. |
The funeral on Wednesday morning, 14th December in Mount Argus Church, Kimmage, Dublin 12 was attended by many hundreds of Pat's former garda colleagues and members of the AGSI and GRA. The attendance included AGSI General Secretary Joe Dirwan and many members of the AGSI executive and staff. Also among the attendance were former AGSI General Secretaries Derek Nally and George Maybury and AGSI President Paddy O'Brien as well as GRA General Secretary P. J. Stone and members of the GRA executive. Commissioner Martin Callanan was present with Assistant Commissioner HRM Fintan Fanning and former Commissioner Noel Conroy.
The obsequies were conducted by Fr Joe Kennedy assisted by Fr Ralph and Fr Eugene of the Mount Argus community. Many members of Pat's family gave the readings during the ceremony.
Pat, who was predeceased by his wife Kathleen, is survived by his children Pamela, Barbara and Patrick, many other relations and his friend Maeve.
