Apology read out in High Court

You may have seen the Irish Mail on Sunday apology to the General Secretary, John Redmond and former President of AGSI, Willie Gleeson, published in today’s national newspapers.

The apology follows a two-year battle with the newspaper following their publication of a front page article defaming John Redmond and Willie Gleeson through an untrue and inaccurate report. The apology was read out in the High Court as follows:

Apology to Mr Willie Gleeson and Mr John Redmond

“On 24 February 2013 we referred to the President and General Secretary of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, Mr Willie Gleeson and Mr John Redmond.

Our report stated that Mr Gleeson and Mr Redmond had travelled together on a golfing trip to Spain and were, therefore, unable to attend a meeting requested by the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána.  We accept that this was untrue.

Neither men play golf and were not on such a trip; nor did they miss such a meeting. We accept that both men are hardworking and respected members of AGSI and are happy to make this clear and apologise to them both.”
