PRESS STATEMENT
1 July 2015

The Government has re-appointed Mr Robert Olson as Chief Inspector and Mr Mark Toland as member of the Garda Síochána Inspectorate for a further two years.

The two members were originally appointed to the Inspectorate in 2012 following an international competition held by the Public Appointments Commission. Both are experienced international police officers. Mr Olson served as Chief of Police in the City of Minneapolis, Minnesota and was a member of the Inspectorate from 2006 to 2009. Mr Toland served with the Metropolitan Police Service in the UK.

The current term of office of the two members was due to expire at the end of this month. Members are eligible for re-appointment under the Garda Síochána Act. Mr Olson, Chief Inspector, and Mr Toland, Member, indicated their interest in re-appointment.

Welcoming the re-appointments Minister Fitzgerald said, “I proposed the re-appointment of two members for a further two years so as to assist with the continuity of the current work programme of the Garda Síochána Inspectorate.”

The term of office of the third member of the Inspectorate, Ms Debra Kirby, expires in September 2015. Separate arrangements will be made in relation to the filling of this post in due course.
